Fivetran & dbt: Why the future of data must be open and reliable

How openness and reliability are redefining the foundation for AI.
October 13, 2025

From the start, it has been clear that Fivetran and dbt Labs share a vision for giving data teams an open, interoperable foundation that unites the dependability of managed infrastructure with the flexibility of open standards. That belief has guided every step of our collaboration, and today, we are proud to share that vision publicly as Fivetran and dbt Labs agree to join forces to set the standard for open data infrastructure.

That vision has been out of reach for most enterprises. Despite years of investment, persistent data siloes and underuse have kept AI pilots from advancing beyond experimentation.

Two forces make this the moment to break that pattern:

  1. AI has evolved from experimentation to execution. It now drives decisions where precision is vital and transparency is expected.
  2. Open standards have matured from technical ideals into the foundation of enterprise data infrastructure. Standards such as open table formats and shared metadata now let data live once and work everywhere, decoupling storage from compute and enabling reliable interoperability across clouds, engines, and catalogs. The industry has, in effect, aligned on common principles and interoperable frameworks.

This is the context for the joining of Fivetran and dbt Labs. The mandate is clear. Data movement, transformation, metadata, activation, and semantics must deliver measurable reliability, end-to-end consistency, and the freedom of choice every data team expects. Built on open standards and shared metadata, this infrastructure gives AI a governed, portable foundation it can rely on.

Why now

Fivetran and dbt Labs have more than 1,500 joint commercial customers, and there are over 16,000 dbt projects run weekly by Fivetran. They’ve shown us what works, where opportunity remains, and why the future demands unified, open data infrastructure.

Fivetran and dbt each anchor critical parts of the modern data stack, reflecting deep expertise across movement and transformation. Fivetran set the standard for automated data movement at scale, backed by a published 99.9% uptime. Its high-volume replication and 700+ managed connectors capture operational change with low toil and predictable freshness. dbt created the standard for analytics engineering and made transformation reproducible, testable, and explainable. Its semantic layer turns metric drift from an inevitability into an anti-pattern.

Together, these capabilities form the backbone of open data infrastructure that is reliable, portable, and ready to power the next generation of analytics, AI agents, and automated decisioning. For enterprises, this means faster decisions, fewer integration bottlenecks, and data systems that scale without added complexity.

Our commitment to openness

This partnership is built on trust, and trust depends on clarity. Because clarity matters during transitions, we want to state our commitments publicly. dbt Core will remain open source under its current license and will continue to be supported and maintained indefinitely. The dbt Fusion engine will remain source-available under its current license and will also continue to be supported indefinitely. These technologies are not just components of an architecture; they are flagships of the open movement and essential to the portability customers expect.

Fivetran has always been part of the dbt community, and our success depends on continuing to earn the trust it has built. We have contributed more than 60 open source dbt packages, showing our belief in open collaboration and commitment to this ecosystem. As well as already offering advanced integrations with dbt Core and the dbt platform, and we are committed to building on that foundation to deliver a unified experience.

SQLMesh and SQLGlot will remain open source, and we are committed to supporting their communities alongside the dbt community. Both frameworks are highly valued and broadly adopted in the industry for SQL parsing, optimization, and transformation.

Our mission is to give data teams choice and control through open standards, not proprietary lock-in. Open licensing is foundational, and openness in design extends to portability, interoperability, and trust. Through shared standards such as SQL, APIs, dbt, and open table formats, data teams can move, model, and activate data anywhere, confident that their tools and data remain fully their own.

Built for the AI era

AI is changing everything about how organizations use data, while exposing the limits of fragmented systems. With Fivetran, customers can move data reliably from any source into any destination through automated pipelines that ensure accuracy, freshness, and resilience. With dbt, they can model, document, and manage that data directly in the warehouse, creating the foundation AI requires.

This moment is bigger than either company. Together, we deliver:

  • Breadth: The largest library of pre-built connectors and refined dbt data models.
  • Reliability: Enterprise-grade uptime and resilience proven at global scale.
  • Speed and efficiency: A transformation engine purpose-built for SQL, supported by state-aware orchestration that eliminates redundant compute.
  • AI powered: Agents and copilots that extend the reach and capability of every data team.

Consider how this works in practice. Saks uses Fivetran to deliver operational events from tens of SaaS apps and OLTP systems with SLAs on delivery and uptime. dbt orchestrates contracts, tests, and transformations that compile into governed models and a semantic layer. The same definitions feed analytics reporting, but also AI agents that answer “Can you give me a recommendation of what to buy based on previous purchases?” and uses lineage to show exactly which inputs were read and when. This gives agents the context to be right and the paper trail to be trusted.

Together, Fivetran and dbt will close the gap between raw data and AI-ready data.

A future defined by openness and reliability

Openness and reliability can seem at odds, with one emphasizing flexibility and the other predictability. At Fivetran and dbt Labs, we see them as complementary. Openness only succeeds when it is reliable enough for enterprise scale, and reliability endures when built on open, interoperable foundations.

Until the transaction closes, it is business as usual for customers, with no changes to contracts or support. After close, our commitment remains the same: to uphold open standards, deliver enterprise-grade reliability, and continue unifying our platforms into an open infrastructure that enables AI to scale with confidence.

To the dbt community, to our shared customers, and to every data practitioner who has shaped this ecosystem: thank you. You built the foundation we stand on, and we are committed to strengthening and advancing it together.

The era of open data infrastructure has arrived, giving AI the foundation it has always needed: the reliability enterprises depend on and the openness teams control. Most of the world’s data remains idle. It is time to put it to work on your terms.
