Unlocking third-party compatibility with our new SDKs

Third-party vendors can now leverage Fivetran software development kits to build their own Fivetran connectors and destinations.

The Fivetran data movement platform is powerful and robust — offering an extensive ecosystem of platform compatibility between more than 400 unique data sources and 14 top data destinations. To date, more than 45,000 data professionals across the globe rely on Fivetran to power their data movement. Though Fivetran’s roadmap is expansive and fueled by hundreds of engineers, the demand for more sources and destinations continues to grow.

In effort to continue the acceleration of available data sources and destinations, Fivetran developed two new SDKs (software development kits) for tech vendors to leverage and build their own connector or destination for their service, on top of our reliable, robust platform. "Companies that need to unlock data for their customers can leverage Fivetran's infrastructure to build highly secure and scalable connectors and destinations for their customers that operate no differently than our native builds," said Fraser Harris, VP of Product at Fivetran, about this new third-party compatibility.

"This is a huge value add for partners, allowing sources to take advantage of the Fivetran network and all its destinations. For destinations, you can activate your product with Fivetran’s extensive and ever-growing list of sources.”
- Fraser Harris, VP of Product at Fivetran

Connector SDK

Databases, SaaS companies and vendors of API-enabled software can become Fivetran source partners by writing their own integration using the Connector SDK. This provides your customers with an easy, automated and reliable way to move their data to their destination of choice – efficiently and in an analytic ready format – for analysis and enrichment with other data, increasing the value of the data they receive from your application.

Destination SDK

Data warehouses, data lakes and storage vendors can leverage the Destination SDK for Fivetran to easily allow joint customers to load their critical business data from any of our 400+ connectors to their destination platform. Centralizing data into a single destination empowers customers to access analytical and transactional data for reporting, efficiencies and predictive analytics.

New SDK-built connectors and destinations

Two partners have already utilized the new SDKs to bring new connectors to market:

PlanetScale is a MySQL database platform. The PlanetScale connector is a fully-managed data integration that can extract data from your PlanetScale database and safely load it into other destinations for analysis, transformation and more.

“Fivetran's gRPC connector interface is well designed and a joy to implement. We're really excited to offer our customers a robust, easy-to-use ETL pipeline for analyzing data from their PlanetScale database in their tool of choice.”
-Phani Raju, Software Engineer at PlanetScale

Convex is a backend-as-a-service that lets you build full stack, type-safe applications, replacing your database, server functions and glue code. The Convex Connector on Fivetran is powered by Convex’s streaming export APIs, providing efficient, fully-consistent snapshots of your data synced to your destination of choice.

“Writing a connector for Fivetran was a great experience. It’s easy to do and the interface is clearly thought through, especially when it comes to schema changes and transactional data sync.”
- Nipunn Koorapati, Software Engineer at Convex

Like all Fivetran connectors, the PlanetScale and Convex connectors provide data from the platforms in a normalized, analytic-ready format. Customers using Fivetran to move data benefit from no-code deployment, automatic schema migration and integrated scheduling on the Fivetran platform.

Fivetran users can utilize the PlanetScale and Convex connectors now in private preview.

MotherDuck is a serverless, easy-to-use data analytics platform based on DuckDB. MotherDuck is leveraging the Fivetran Destination SDK to create the first destination built by a vendor.

“MotherDuck and Fivetran share the same value of making data analytics easy and accessible to businesses of all sizes. We are excited to integrate with Fivetran's new SDK as an official destination in the Fivetran platform, and have loved the collaboration thus far.”
- Elena Felder, Software Engineer at MotherDuck

The MotherDuck destination, like all Fivetran destinations, can consume normalized data from any of Fivetran’s 400+ data sources, including SaaS applications, databases, events and files. MotherDuck’s destination will be available in private preview in the coming weeks.

Key features and benefits

  • Language agnostic: The gRPC-based SDK allows connectors and destinations to be written in any supported programming language, offering enormous flexibility for developers to reuse existing code or write new code in this language of choice.
  • Reduced complexity: The SDK provides templates and a mock environment, allowing third-party vendors to test and deploy connectors with minimum hassle.
  • The Connector SDK gives vendors an easy way to provide customers with a user-friendly solution to sync data between their platform to any Fivetran destination, such as OLAP databases, to power their analytic use cases.
  • The Destination SDK offers data warehouses, data lakes and storage companies new channels for product activation, giving customers easy access to 400+ compatible connectors on the Fivetran platform.
