Fivetran and dbt Labs have signed an agreement to merge. I want to explain the vision we share for the new company.

This merger will create a strong company that can remain independent and totally committed to openness and interoperability. dbt and Fivetran are the tools that practitioners love. Analysts build careers on dbt; countless people have been able to level up because of dbt. This magic only works because dbt is open source and works with the entire ecosystem. Its open source nature is key; nobody really owns dbt. None of this is going to change.

Our goal is to create the data platform for every workload for the next 10 years. At this moment, everyone can see that AI is going to be the most important consumer of business data, but nobody knows exactly how that is going to work. Being future proof is more important than ever, and the way to do this is to choose tools that are interoperable with the entire ecosystem, including the parts of the ecosystem that have yet to be invented.

I have come to appreciate over the years the loyalty that analysts have to dbt. It’s the tool they work with every day. In many cases it’s changed their careers and enabled them to take on bigger jobs, get promoted, make more money, and accomplish more in their work. It’s the most important tool in the ecosystem and we understand that and we take the responsibility to be good stewards seriously. dbt is going to keep getting better.
