The future of Fivetran and HVR

Our priority is improving the experience of every customer — without compromising the features you rely on.
November 4, 2021

After joining forces, all of us at Fivetran and HVR are beyond excited about the future of data replication and integration. Together, we’re bringing ease of use and automation to high-volume, real-time change data capture (CDC). We know how hard it is to become fully data-driven, and we’re thrilled that our joint offering removes the single largest bottleneck: movement of data to wherever it’s needed.

We also understand that mergers have the potential to be disruptive, and our priority right now is creating a better experience for all Fivetran and HVR customers — without compromising any of the features you rely on. Here’s how we’re planning to make that happen.

HVR 6

HVR 6 delivers an intuitive, automated experience for customers, and we’re releasing it into general availability in December 2021. HVR 6 features:

  • An easy-to-use web UI
  • Role-based access control
  • REST APIs for orchestration
  • SAP ERP runtime license compatible capture
  • Sybase ASE database capture

As a combined company, Fivetran and HVR are positioned to offer customers even better overall support. The scale of the Fivetran support organization will be augmented by the phenomenal expertise of HVR’s CDC and database domain experts. Support is available 24/7/365 from experts in seven offices around the globe.

HVR as a managed service

Over the coming months, our combined product and engineering organizations will be working on our first product integration: a managed service version of HVR's high-volume, real-time replication technology, integrated into the Fivetran.com user experience. This will bring the best of both products together: reliable, high-throughput data movement with ease of use and limited configuration. This offering is based on high-volume agent replication from on-premise enterprise database sources like Oracle, SQL Server and SAP HANA. We will also be supporting the major cloud destinations that Fivetran has long supported. This will create the foundation for offering HVR’s industry-best data integration for SAP ERP to the cloud, supporting both ECC and S/4HANA.

In the coming year, you can also expect to see HVR’s DNA come through in other features of our managed service. Fivetran will be adding many more destinations, taking mission-critical data from the heart of enterprises and securely broadcasting it anywhere it’s needed. Fivetran will be adding native support for data integration topologies to support more complex use cases, such as one-to-many broadcasting from a single source. You'll also see HVR's data validation (compare and repair) make its way into the Fivetran.com user experience.

Unified pricing

We’re working diligently to simplify HVR and Fivetran pricing into a single consumption-based model for all new customers. You will have the complete flexibility to move data through HVR 6’s deployed agents or on the Fivetran managed service, so you’ll benefit equally from automatic volume discounts. Ajay Bidani, Digital Enablement and Insights Manager at Powell Industries, describes the benefits of this pricing model:

As a manufacturing company, everything we do is about cost and margin. The consumption-based model is easier to wrap your head around because your usage and benefit are driving the cost. Consumption effectively scales with whatever pace you are scaling, so you aren’t paying ahead of where you’re at.

Data governance

Data governance and the effective enforcement of governance policies is a pain point for customers of both Fivetran and HVR. We know that there’s real tension between the need to maintain strong governance of data and the desire to empower more self-service for distributed data teams. We’re now delivering the building blocks for a data governance program; our near-term plans include increased data visibility and more data controls.

Data visibility

In December, we will launch our Metadata API, which programmatically exposes everything Fivetran knows about the data flowing through the system, how that data is evolving, and who is responsible for those changes. This same metadata will be shared via native integrations into leading data catalogs and governance vendors. Soon this metadata will include automatically detected personally identifiable information (PII).

Data controls

We are currently rolling out fine-grained user permissions, to be followed by delegating permissions and programmatic user provisioning. Working in combination with automated detection of PII, these features will automate policy enforcement and trigger approval and review workflows.

For example, a marketing analyst could create a Fivetran pipeline bringing data from a new app into a warehouse, and Fivetran would automatically detect any PII and hold the data in flight. The PII would be flagged to a data governance team, with all of the metadata necessary to make a determination — the PII could be masked or blocked, or the request could be denied.

One company, one code base

Over time, Fivetran and HVR will merge code bases to deliver a single managed service offering. That offering will meet or exceed the security, governance and operational requirements of the most sensitive organizations: healthcare, finance and government. Throughout this process, we will listen carefully to our customers and partners, and include you in discussions on how to best architect this using modern technology built for a hybrid cloud world.
